Quinceaños. No Big Deal for Boys

We've begun our annual five-month birthday run. Turns out that the five of us have birthdays in June, July, August, September and October. If you're familiar with how things roll in Mexico, you know that means multiple parties. That's ok. We like parties! Below, with his Mexican grandmother, aunt and cousin.

Dan turned 15 recently. Now, we're glad he's a boy, because 15 is just like any other birthday. But for a girl, well, that's a whole nother story! In just over two years Cathy will be 15...which means a mega-party. The quinceaños event here in Mexico is comparable in expense and splendor to a wedding. Unbelievable how elegant some of those parties are. We need to begin to save money for Cathy's event...because that's the big event where all the former summer interns are invited to return for the celebration!

Daniel's new pursuit is to get a driver's permit. Funny, here in Mexico it is the huge rite of passage that it is in the U.S. We're not even sure at what age you can get a permit. I hope it's 18. Or older.
