Pray for December ministry plans

Here's a note I wrote to Cliff Johnson, coordinator of the young adult ministry at Woodside Bible Church, Troy, MI. It is about the events we're planning for December. I sent this note one week ago.

Cliff and Lighthouse,

Today two other leaders in the church, Samuel and Martin, and I had a follow-up meeting with the administrator of the mall where the band from Lighthouse will be playing, to confirm and amplify plans that we had mentioned to the administrator’s secretary this past Saturday.

We really felt like the Lord was with us as we pretty much got a blank check from the mall’s administrator. Here is a basic breakdown of your week here as it pertains to the band’s involvement at the mall.

Arrive in Mexico City, Saturday, December 13
December 14, 10 a.m.—Be involved in our Sunday church service. Cliff preaches. The band plays, etc…
5 p.m. Help celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the mall (called Cortijo Mall) with a Christmas concert. Hopefully you will be doing some Christmas songs with Laura Guaza, a very talented Christian young lady from Colombia who is currently producing a Christian CD.

Monday-Friday: Free music classes with interested students.
Monday-Tuesday: No commitments at mall (unless we teach music classes there)
Wednesday-Friday: Christmas music at the mall, background music…instrumental, maybe some vocals,

Saturday: No mall activity, we are planning a full-blown concert near the church. This concert can include Christmas music, but can also include Christian choruses, some of which we know in both languages…like Breathe, How Great is Our God, Lord I Lift Your Name on High, Shout to the Lord, others…

Sunday: Back to the mall for a Christmas play that the church will be doing…shepherds, wise men, JESUS!! etc… The band can play during a break in the middle of the drama. The drama is short…maybe 40 minutes total, and we’ll plan on doing it probably twice that day (Sunday, Dec. 21).

So…we have quite a lot scheduled musically. Do you have people that could help paint backdrops/decorations, do prop work, help with lighting, etc…for the drama??

Martin here is a really good sound man, but we could really use help in stage set-up, decoration, etc…during your week here. I think you mentioned that some artsy people will be on the trip.

This mall opportunity is HUGE for us…might not seem like a big deal to you possibly, but this will give our church huge exposure. It’s going to really stretch us to pull this all off…we’re a pretty small group. Although the witnessing opps are rather limited while at the mall, the contacts we make will be many. The church is less than a mile from the mall.

Other activities during the week…English classes for those not involved with music, music classes (as I already mentioned…not sure where or when yet), community clean-up projects and sports opps (maybe, depending on time restrictions).

What I need from the group is any and every comment or suggestion that you might have after reading this page of text. I don’t know any of you, don’t really know what you can do or want to do…but if you tell me there’s a decent chance we can make it happen! For example, could you do some sort of mime or drama for our mall time?

Other ideas??? Please let me know asap.

Thanks,

Rod

Quote of the Day:
Golfers use the term “grinding” to describe their commitment to keep playing even when they’re not shooting well. Some even call it “the glory of the grind.” Most church ministry is like a round of golf. You start the round with stars in your eyes, full of hope. You hit a few good shots and you feel great. You’re like a golfer hitting it on the screws three hundred yards down the middle or sinking a thirty-footer for birdie. But then you hit a few freaky shots. You follow the birdie with a score so high a name doesn’t even exist for it. In the same way, the daily grind of church life includes those days when everything goes right and you’re filled with wonder and awe. But other days, everything goes wrong and you wish you were making lattes at Starbucks.
