Independence Day

This evening, at 11 p.m., the president of Mexico will stand on a balcony of the presidential palace that borders the zócalo, or city center, and shout a number of things, among them, "Viva Hidalgo", Viva Morelos, and, lastly, at the top of his lungs, ¡VIVA MEXICO! This last phrase he will shout several times. Fireworks will go off. The crowd will go crazy. Many homes will be glued to their tv sets to see this ceremony.

The fires of independence from Spain that were ignited in Dolores Hidalgo by the revolutionary priest would eventually give independence to most of the hemisphere. Word took a few days to filter down through Central and South America.

Our kids celebrated this historic event at school every year of course. Here are some pictures!
