The following is a simple work in progress, a drama that we'll be doing for our closing program for English class. The drama is in English and Spanish.
Christmas 2010/Navidad 2010
If Jesus were born today, how might it happen?
Si Jesús naciera hoy, ¿cómo sería?
Act 1/Acto 1
Narrator—If Jesus were to be born this year, in 2010, how would that be? The following simple drama gives an idea of how Christmas might be if Jesus were born in Ixtapaluca, December 2010.
Narrador—Si naciera hoy en día Jesús, en 2010, ¿cómo sería? Este drama sencillo da una idea de cómo sería la Navidad si Jesus naciera en Ixtapaluca, diciembre 2010.
Scene 1/Escena 1 (Escena única)—Joseph and Mary at the market/José y María en el mercado
Joseph and Mary talk together, Mary is ready to give birth…
José y María hablan juntos, María ya a punto de dar a luz…
Joseph—Mary, I’m sorry that we couldn´t find a better place! All of the hotels are full! The only place we found is a market.
José—María, siento mucho que no pudimos encontrar un mejor lugar. ¡Todos los hoteles están llenos! El único lugar que encontramos es un mercado.
Mary—That’s ok, Joseph, it looks like it is safe and dry. We will be fine here.
María—Está bien, José, parece que es un lugar seguro y seco. Estaremos bien aquí.
Joseph—At least we have a sink with water, and electricity. Maybe we can make a bed for you, my dear.
José—Por lo menos tenemos un lavabo con agua, y luz. Tal vez podemos hacer una cama para ti, mi cariño.
Mary—This baby that I have inside of me, it is a very special baby! I know that it is a baby sent from God, with a very special purpose!
María—Este bebé que tengo adentro de mí, ¡es un bebé muy especial!
Joseph—Yes, I know he is! An angel told me not to be afraid to take you as my wife. The father of this baby is God himself! She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
José—Sí, ¡sé que es! Un ángel me dijo que no tuviera miedo de tomarte como mi esposa. ¡El padre de este bebé es Dios mismo! Dios me dijo: Dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados.»
Act 2
Scene 1/Escena 1—The builders gathered around their work/Los albañiles en su trabajo
Narrator--There were construction workers building a wall, working late into the night. They were normal, common men, working to provide for their families. Their lives were about to change forever!
Narrador—Había albañiles, construyendo una pared, trabajando hasta muy tarde. Eran hombres normales, trabajando para proveer a sus familias. ¡Sus vidas estaban a punto de cambiar para siempre!
Builder 1—Keep working, my friends, we have much to do.
Albañil 1—Siguen trabajando, mis amigos, tenemos mucho que hacer.
Builder 2—Yes, we need to finish this wall by tomorrow.
Albañil 2—Sí, tenemos que terminar esta pared mañana.
Builder 3—Pass me another brick over here!
Albañil 3—¡Pásame otro ladrillo por aquí!
Builder 1—I hope we have more work after this job. My family needs the money.
Albañil 1—Espero que tengamos más trabajo después de este. Mi familia necesita el dinero.
Builder 3—Prices keep going up and up! ¡7 pesos for the combi!
¡Los precios suben y suben! ¡7 pesos para la combi!
Builder 2—It is getting dark. We need to hurry and finish.
Albañil 2—Se está oscureciendo. Tenemos que apurarnos.
Scene 2/Escena 2
Narrator—Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them,
Narrador—De repente un ángel del Señor se les apareció, y la gloria del Señor brilló alrededor, y se asustaron mucho. Pero el ángel les dijo:
Angel--“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news for all the people. Today in the town of Ixtapaluca a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. You will find a baby in a diaper and lying in a market store.”
Ángel—No tengan miedo. Les traigo buenas noticias para todas las personas. Hoy en el pueblo de Ixtapaluca un Salvador ha nacido. Él es el Mesías, el Señor. Lo van a encontrar en pañales, acostado en un mercado.
Builder 1—Let’s go! Quickly! Let’s go and see the birth of this baby, the Messiah, the Lord!
Albañil 1—¡Vámonos! ¡Vamos a ver el nacimiento de este bebé, el Mesías, el Señor!
Builder 2—Yes! Let’s go quickly to the market!
Albañil 2--¡Sí! ¡Vamos rápidos al mercado!
Escena 3
The arrival of the builders
La llegada de los albañiles
(Joseph and Mary are in local 13. The builders come from local 8)
( La pareja está en local 13. Los albañiles se acercan desde el local 8)
Builder 3—Look, it looks like there is someone living in that market. Just like the angel said!
Albañil 3—Mira, parece que hay alguien viviendo en ese local. ¡Así como nos dijo el ángel!
Builder 2—Yes, there is a young couple. And a baby! Could it be the Messiah?
Albañil 2—Mira, ahí hay una pareja joven. ¡Y un bebé! ¿Podría ser el Mesías?
Builder 1—I want to meet this baby! Let’s go and say hi!
Albañil 1—Quiero conocer a este bebé. ¡Vamos a saludarlo!
(They come closer to local 13, where Joseph and Mary are)
(Se acercan más al local 13 donde está la pareja)
Mary—Joseph, I think I see someone coming this way.
María—José, creo que veo a alguien acercándose.
Joseph—But, who could it be? Nobody knows we are here! Only God!
José—Pero, ¿quién podría ser? ¡Nadie sabe que estamos aquí! ¡Solamente Dios!
Builder 1—Hello! Good evening! We come in peace.
Albañil 1--¡Hola! ¡Buenas noches! Venimos en paz.
Builder 2—We are here because God sent us a message. He sent his angels to tell us about the birth of your son.
Albañil—Estamos aquí porque Dios nos envió un mensaje. Nos mandó sus ángeles para decirnos del nacimiento de su hijo.
Mary—Praise be to God! He has blessed me with this beautiful child, and has given the world a Savior.
María--¡Alabado sea Dios! Él me ha bendecido con este niño precioso, y ha dado al mundo un Salvador.
Joseph—How wonderful is the Lord, who has sent His Son to be born in a market! God, in human flesh, Emmanuel!
José--¡Qué maravilloso es el Señor, quién ha enviado a Su Hijo para nacer en un mercado! Dios, en carne humana, Emanuel!
The scene ends, the builders go back to their homes, exiting stage right.
La escena termina, los albañiles salen hacia su derecha.
Act 3/Acto 3
The scene begins with a group of scientists with the NASA, looking at maps and pointing up at the sky.
La escena comienza con un grupo de científicos, viendo un mapa y mirando al cielo.
Scientist 1—Something has definitely happened! Do you see that bright star there? And that comet there? They seem
to be telling us something!
Científico 1—¡Algo definitivamente ha pasado! ¿Ven esa estrella brillante ahí? ¿Y esa cometa ahí? ¡Parece que nos están diciendo algo!
Scientist 2—And remember the prophecies that are written in the Bible? They tell about a Messiah, a baby that will be
sent from heaven to earth. Could this be the child?
Científico 2—¿Y se recuerdan de las profecías escritas en la Biblia? Nos hablan de un Mesías, un bebé que va a nacer. ¿Podría ser ese el niño?
Scientist 3—Where is the bright star shining? Can we tell?
Científico 3—¿Dónde brilla la estrella brillante? ¿Podemos saber?
Scientist 1—The star seems to be shining down on a town near Mexico City. A small, insignificant place called
Ixtapaluca.
Científico 1—La estrella parece estar brillando en un pueblo cerca de la Ciudad de México. Un lugar pequeño e insignificante llamado Ixtapaluca.
Scientist 3—Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s buy a ticket for an airplane and fly down as soon as we can!
Científico 3—Bueno, pues, ¿a qué esperamos? ¡Compremos un boleto de avión y volamos lo más pronto posible!
Scientist 2—Yes, let´s go! Let’s go see what God has done!
Científico 2—¡Sí, vamos a ver! ¡Vamos a ver lo que ha hecho Dios!
(The scientists arrive in a taxi at the market at Jesús María)
(Los científicos llegan en un taxi al mercado de Jesús María)
Act 3, Scene 2/Acto 3, Escena 2
The scientists come to the market following the star, and ask to see the baby Jesus.
Los científicos llegan al mercado, siguiendo la estrella, y piden ver al niño Jesús)
Narrator—The scientists from NASA went to the airport and boarded a plane for Mexico City. Then they took a taxi and went as fast as they could to the market where Jesus and his mother Mary and human father José lived.
Narrador: Los científicos de la NASA fueron al aeropuerto, y abordaron un avión a la Ciudad de México. Después, subieron a un taxi, y llegaron a toda prisa al mercado donde vivía Jesús con su madre María y su padre humano, José.
Taxi Driver—We are almost here. That will be 500 pesos, please! But, can you tell me, why are people like yourselves coming to this market?
Chofer de Taxi—Ya casi llegamos. Será 500 pesos por favor. Pero, me pueden decir…¿por qué viene gente como ustedes a este mercado?
Scientist 3—Because we believe that God has sent his Son to earth. He is the Savior of the world!
Científico 3—Porque creemos nosotros que Dios ha enviado a su Hijo a planeta tierra. ¡Él es el Salvador del mundo!
Taxi driver—Really? You really think that? Well, I guess everyone can believe whatever they want! I have to return. Good night!
Chofer de taxi--¿De verás? ¿Realmente creen eso? ¡Bueno, supongo que cada uno puede creer lo que quiere! Yo me tengo que regresar. ¡Buenas noches!
Scientist 1—There it is, there it is…the star that we saw in the sky is here over this market!
Científico 1—¡Ahí está, ahí está!...la estrella que vimos en el cielo está aquí sobre este mercado!
Scientist 2—What wonderful news! God has come in human form, in human flesh!
Científico 2--¡Qué buenas noticias! ¡Dios ha venido en forma humana, en carne humana!
Scientist 3—We have come from very far away, and have followed the heavenly signs, to come and worship this King.
Científico 3—Hemos llegado desde muy lejos, y hemos seguido las señales celestiales, para venir a adorar este Rey.
Scientist 1—We brought some money for you, too. Please accept it as a gift to your son, who is a very special boy!
Científico 1--Trajimos algo de dinero para ustedes, también. Favor de aceptarlo como un regalo a su hijo, quien es un niño muy especial.
Mary—My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
María—¡Mi alma glorifica al Señor, y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador!
Joseph—Thank you, my new friends, thank you so much. We know that it is God that has brought you from such a far away land.
José—Gracias, mis nuevos amigos. Sabemos que es Dios que les ha traído de una tierra tan lejana.
